We have been given a contact person at UNC. She is called our Liver Transplant Coordinator. She helps to guide us through the liver transplant evaluation process with the goal of getting us to transplant and then care after transplant. We are very fortunate that our transplant coordinator is very knowledgeable, professional and patient. She encourages us to be in contact with her and really makes our communication with the liver doctor easier. We have been instructed to call her every time there is any kind of a change in Philip’s condition. If she is not in the office we have an after hours phone number to call. The liver team wants to be involved in every part of his medical condition. We are only now beginning to understand the broad range of issues that can come up because of liver disease.
This morning I spoke with our coordinator and she will relay the information to the liver doctor that both of Philip’s legs are very swollen and oozing. If there is anything that we need to do they will tell us. She explained that they are reluctant to put him on diuretics because his kidneys have already shut down twice, and they don’t want him to have to be on dialysis. I was a little shocked as I hadn’t realized that the kidney’s shutting down was of such concern.
Philip has his legs elevated and continues to smile.
Our next update will be October 3, 2010.
I am thankful that Phil is getting such GREAT care and that the medical personnel are all very caring and involved!! Phil called me the other day to visit and I am truly amazed and greatful how optimistic and “up” he is!! He truly has a great attitude. I really like my friend Phil a whole lot, love him even, as a friend. My prayers ensue for Phil and WILL continue. I feel SO very blessed that Phil is in my life! God put him there, that day on the game in Pogo!! I will continue, as well, to hold all of you, his family and loved ones, up in prayers. BigHugz, Lois
